Course Description and Requirements
The Fourth Year Medical Student elective is designed such that the student performs the primary evaluation of Emergency Department patients. The student works directly with faculty and senior residents and will experience the team approach to patient care.

Goals of the Elective:
  • The overall goal of this rotation is to further develop the student’s bedside skills, including diagnosis and management of the acutely ill patient, and emphasis on management of life-threatening conditions in the undifferentiated patient.
  • The student will be directly involved in patient care in the ED with a diverse mix of patients.
  • The student will solidify skills in history taking and physical examination with an emphasis on management and disposition.
Med Student Elective! In addition to clinical shifts, students are required to attend the five hours of weekly Grand Rounds (will be excused from clinical duty if they coincide) as well as the daily one-half hour Morning Report (7:30 am). Most months there will be weekly student didactic sessions with lecture topics including ECG interpretation, radiograph interpretation, ultrasound, among others. The topics will vary from month to month. There will also be skills labs for honing procedural skills such as endotracheal intubation and splinting.
Med Student Elective!Students will perform procedures on their patients including, but not limited to, arterial blood gas, nasogastric tube placement, laceration repair, IV placement, joint reduction, femoral vein puncture CPR, simple incision and drainage, nerve blocks, and interpret clinical data (X-rays, lab results).
