Bill Hinckley received his BS in Kinesiology with highest distinction from Indiana University in 1996, and from there went on to Indiana University School of Medicine, where he received his MD with AOA honors in 2000. He came to Cincinnati due to its storied history in the realms of emergency medicine, helicopter EMS, roller coasters, and baseball (in approximately that order), completing the University of Cincinnati’s emergency medicine residency and chief residency in 2004.
After residency, Bill joined the UC EM faculty as assistant professor, working clinically mostly at the Christ and University EDs. He served for two years as associate medical director of Air Care under the mentorship of Dr. Steve Carleton, and in 2006 stepped up to assume the medical directorship. Bill is passionate about critical care transport and helicopter EMS, and he’s particularly passionate about the Air Care flight team, which year after year just keeps getting greater. Bill is a staunch advocate for making the helicopter EMS experience absolutely as safe as possible for our flight team. He is collaborating with several colleagues on research in various aspects of helicopter EMS, he is an editor of the Air Medical Journal, he sits on the Board of AMPA (the Air Medical Physician Association), and he’s a member of the steering committee of CCT CORE, an international critical care transport research collaboration. He remains very active in resident and medical student education.
During his time off, Bill and his wonderful wife, daughter, and son enjoy rooting for the Reds and the IU Hoosiers, hiking, and camping. You can also often find him at Kings Island, where he once rode The Beast 26 times in one day, without even sustaining a (symptomatic) carotid dissection (though Dr. Stettler disputes this).
