Dr. Collins completed his undergraduate work at Boston University in 1993, receiving a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering. He then went to medical school at the University of Wisconsin, before attending the residency program at the University of Cincinnati. After serving as chief resident during his final year of residency, Dr. Collins joined the staff in the Department of Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Collins joined the staff in 2001 as an Assistant Professor and works in the Cardiovascular Division. The primary focus of his research is acute heart failure. He is currently a site Principal Investigator on an NIH/NHLBI R01 (Improving Heart Failure Risk Stratification in the ED- PI- Alan Storrow, MD- Vanderbilt). His collaboration with Dr. Neal Weintraub (Division Director of Cardiology- Cincinnati) and Dr. Storrow resulted in funding on a K23 grant from the NIH/NHLBI investigating heart failure risk-stratification after acute therapy (funding period 2008-2013). The aim of this grant is to determine objective endpoints of acute heart failure therapy, facilitating safe, early hospital discharge. Dr. Collins also collaborates with the Division of Cardiology on several therapeutic trials for patients with acute heart failure. He also continues to be heavily involved with resident research projects and resident education in journal club and grand rounds. |
